Upgrade (2018) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) It's funny, violent and full of ideas. Jan 5, 2019 Full Review Upgrade (2018) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Tara Brady Irish Times Jed Palmer's excellent 1980s-alike score would alone justify the admission price. Good, clean, gory fun. Sep 7, 2018 Full Review Upgrade (2018) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) It’s a rather run of the mill revenge story on paper, but the way it blends sci-fi elements into this common narrative is a welcome mix up. Jay W Yes, this film came out the same year as "Venom" and had a similar premise, in theory. Both involve a man getting his mind infiltrated by another personality as they try to balance their thoughts and the invading force. At the very least, that is how Venom in the comics is done. But "Upgrade" is a better version of that movie. But enough talking about missed potential, let's talk about what this film did right. As far as the other elephant in the room, how was this movie made with just a 5-million-dollar budget? It is mind boggling that they were able to do so much with so little. It does not feel like a low budget movie, never do I see them cutting corners because of budget restraint.Logan Marshall-Green does an excellent job in a truly layered role. In the physical aspect, he is great at acting like he is being controlled by some foreign entity or having the posture of a more robotic form or whatever the script demands for his character to do. Likewise, from the emotional standpoint he works for every emotional beat. Depressed, overwhelmed, happy, confused or psychotic he can do it all. They do a good job setting this guy up as a likable protagonist and manipulated the story piece by piece. The action was very unique. It was stylized but in a way that makes sense for the context of the fights. It's a fighting style that looks cool and I haven't seen anything like it before or since.Beyond the action and set pieces, the movie also has a pretty clever message about the use of technology. With AI and technology getting more prevalent in society, the message of the movie shows no signs of aging. It is just a really clever movie. The negatives I have would be in some of the side characters not being all that interesting. And when it is all revealed, there are some plot points that wouldn't quite add up.But overall, this film is indeed a serious upgrade. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Mike M not quite what i expected. definitely a B kinda movie, but a fresh idea on an old idea, with some scenes, twists, and surprises that made it worth the watch. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Atlis S So, I really liked the concept of this movie. The setting and even cybernetic enhancement aspect of it. I also liked the AI Stem. It was action packed, with a straightforward plot that was fast paced. Unfortunately, I think as with most sci-fi and dystopian settings that revolve around tech, the ending can be predictable. I wish they hadn't gone this route. Not only that, but what happens with the hacker. Formerly Jamie makes a reference about "they" which is never addressed again. Eron, almost seems moronic, I'll let you come to your own conclusions as to why that might be. Overall, still worth a watch.
