Cut off the excess wire, leaving about 4 to 6 inches of string hanging out of the trimmer. Your weed eater may not work without this excess string. It's OK if you can't get it exactly right, as the weed eater will cut off any additional excess when you start it.

There are a few possible reasons in which a string trimmer will excessively feed line. The incorrect type or size of line may be installed. A string that's too big can get stuck, and a string that's too small is more likely to break.

So, contrary to earlier widespread reports, Lowes is in fact abandoning Kobalt hand tools for Craftsman. Now, I have boxes full of generations of REAL Craftsman tools, but I stopped even looking at them after Stanley Black & Decker bought the brand because they further cheapened their design.

The trimmer line is getting worn down too short, which causes increased heat which melts the string together in the head. Keep the string longer and don't let it get too short when trimming up against hard objects. Sounds like you are using the wrong string size.
