  • Level: Undergraduate/adult Setting: Classroom Activity Type: Learning Cycle Discipline: Chemistry Course: Modified GOB chemistry keywords: buffer, buffer capacity, weak acid, conjugate base   Abstract The GOB chemistry course is part of a biomedical workforce development program for adults with a wide range of backgrounds.  A significant number of students have not studied chemistry before, or have a very basic middle school level.  In the laboratory, students will learn to make biological buffer solutions, adjust the pH of a buffer solution by addition of acid or base, and utilize the concept of buffer capacity. This POGIL activity provides the students with a conceptual understanding of what is happening to the buffer upon addition of acid or base and why the buffer solution shows a smaller change in pH than a solution without any buffer.  The particle diagrams are adapted from a tutorial created by Chem Collective: http://chemcollective.org/activities/tutorials/buffers/buffers1

  • Learning Objectives Describe the relationship between pH, Ka and [A-]/[HA] for a buffer solution. Use logarithmic relationships to convert the equilibrium expression into the Henderson Hasselbalch (HH) equation, and use both equations for pH calculations. Apply the HH equation to designing a buffer for a desired pH. This activity uses phosphate buffer to explore the relationships between pH, Ka and [A-]/[HA].  Students use logarithmic properties to determine that the HH equation is equivalent to the equilibrium expression.  Finally, students choose a pH and use the HH equation to design a buffer solution. The activity is designed for an adult biomedical workforce training program. Students have already made buffer solutions in the laboratory and made careful pH measurements.  This activity offers an opportunity to understand the factors that determine the pH of a buffer solution, reinforcing the idea that both the Ka and the [A-]/[HA] ratio are important. • |Biochemistry: A Guided Inquiry uses the philosophy of Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) to teach the fundamental concepts of biochemistry. In these activities, students will work in teams to explore models of biochemical information and develop essential ideas so they can more fully understand the discipline. In addition, they will intentionally practice process skills including teamwork, information processing, critical thinking, and communication. The topics in this book cover the major themes of biomolecules, metabolism, and the replication, transcription, and translation of genetic information. If you are interested in having instructor resources please reach out to POGILKHrep@kendallhunt.com. Kendall Hunt is excited to partner with The POGIL Project to publish materials in a variety of disciplines that are designed for use in active learning, student-centered classrooms.POGIL is an acronym for Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning. Because POGIL is a student-centered instructional approach, in a typical POGIL classroom or laboratory, students work in small teams with the instructor acting as a facilitator. The student teams use specially designed activities that generally follow a learning cycle paradigm. These activities are designed to have three key characteristics:They are designed for use with self-managed teams that employ the instructor as a facilitator of learning rather than a source of information. They guide students through an exploration to...

  • $\require{mhchem}$This lesson illustrates how a series of components/resources can be sequenced to create an active learning session for your students.  Less emphasis is placed on having the instructor present information to students. More emphasis is placed on having students think, make decisions, and answer a series of questions based on a model. The model is presented in the Student Activity Book and within the Interactive Lecture Demonstration: Students compare water and three aqueous solutions - hydrochloric acid, HCl(aq), acetic acid(aq) and sodium acetate(aq). The first part of the instructional activities focuses on providing information to students about what occurs in four solutions.  A definition of a buffer solution and the concept of a buffer solution is delayed until students have explored what occurs in four solutions.  A guided-inquiry approach is used with a simple learning cycle: exploration, concept introduction, application.  There is a Power Point presentation designed to facilitate active learning by incorporating computer animations, interactive demonstration (or a video of the demonstration), In-Class activities from the General Chemistry Student Activity Book, quiz questions, particles diagrams or "molecular scenes", etc.  Instructors can use the lesson as is, or instructors can pick the components they want and use the components in any order they want. However, we believe there is an optimal sequence of instructional activities.
